Freelance Whales
Freelance Whales are an indie rock band hailing from Queens, NY. To call the memebers multi-instrumentalists might be a little overdone. The kids in Whales are really just collectors at heart. The group consists of frontman Judah Dadone (lead vocals, bango, acoustic/electric guitar, synthesizer, bass), Nicole Mourelatos a.k.a. Doris Cellar (bass, harmonium, glockenspiel, synthesizer, vocals), Chuck Criss (banjo, bass, synthesizer, glockenspiel, harmonium, acoustic/electric guitar, vocals), Jacob Hyman (drums, percussion, vocals), and Kevin Read (acoustic/electric guitar, glockenspiel, mandolin, synthesizer, vocals). This video is "1st Floor Generator" from their debut album Weathervanes.
Freelance Whales came together in 2008 after connecting through Craigslist and friends-of-friends. The band's debut album, was largely composed by Judah Dadone. The lyrics are based on a combination of childhood memories and dream journaling. The band's name derives from Dadone's childhood in Jerusalem, and a near-drowning incident in the Sea of Galilee. The band began to gain traction in October of 2009 as they honed their sound on subway platforms around New York City.
Wow, what an interesting combination of instruments. The girl is playing an instrument I've seen when singing Hindu songs at the ashram, but I'm not sure what it's called. Do you know? Thanks for the tunes. I've been needing some new music in my life :)
